Why Choose Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)?

Many patients come to us after trying various other approaches with only limited or temporary relief. LLLT offers a gentle, non-invasive, drug-free treatment approach. PBMT/LLLT has evidence supporting its use in selected musculoskeletal pain and injury presentations, particularly where local inflammatory processes and soft tissue irritation are contributing to symptoms.

Common, standard approaches such as icing, stretching, exercises, massage, or anti-inflammatory medications may temporarily ease symptoms but do not always target the underlying tissue irritation or inflammatory drivers. In some cases, these can even aggravate sensitive or inflamed tissues, including exercise introduced too early.

  • Anti-inflammatories: Oral and injectables

    Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Nurofen, Alleve), diclofenac (Voltaren, Arthrexin), meloxicam (Mobic), celecoxib (Celebrex), naproxen (Naprogesic, Naprosyn), and steroid medications, including oral prednisolone or cortisone injections, can reduce pain in some conditions, particularly autoimmune or inflammatory arthritis. However, for chronic injury pain, osteoarthritis, or degenerative musculoskeletal conditions:

    • They often provide limited or incomplete pain relief for some people
    • Their immunosuppressive effects may delay or inhibit tissue healing in some contexts
    • They may reduce the effectiveness of LLLT, which relies on an appropriate immune response
    • Prolonged use may impede recovery
    • NSAIDs can also cause side effects affecting the kidneys, blood pressure, stomach, and heart.

    Overall, anti-inflammatories are best used short-term and intermittently, mainly for temporary pain relief, rather than supporting long-term musculoskeletal healing.

  • Cortisone injections: May offer short-term relief, but repeated or poorly timed injections do not promote tissue repair and can weaken tissues.
  • PRP injections: Invasive and only effective in specific areas, with inconsistent evidence regarding their efficacy.

How LLLT Works

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, designed to initiate healing. However, when this response becomes excessive, it can disrupt the body’s own repair mechanisms, leading to prolonged pain and dysfunction.

LLLT/PBMT is used with the aim of helping modulate this imbalance and supporting the cellular environment involved in tissue recovery. Read how LLLT does this here.

LLLT uses red and near-infrared light and is used with the aim of supporting:

  • Local circulation and oxygen delivery to tissues
  • Lymphatic drainage and waste clearance
  • Local inflammatory modulation, including oxidative stress pathways
  • Cellular energy processes, including ATP production
  • Tissue recovery processes where irritation or injury is present

Importantly, LLLT does this without applying mechanical stress to the injured area, which can be helpful where loading, stretching, massage or exercise may aggravate symptoms during the early stages of recovery.

LLLT/PBM Therapy has been studied in randomised controlled trials and other peer-reviewed research. It is used internationally in clinics, hospitals and sports settings, with the strength of evidence varying by condition, treatment parameters and clinical context.

As a GP-run clinic, we combine expert medical assessment with non-invasive therapy. Every patient is seen by Dr Shikha Parmar to support correct diagnosis and management planning. Treatment delivery is performed by highly trained assistants under direct medical supervision.

Clinical Outcome Goals – What to Expect

Treatment at Laser Pain Therapy is finite and aims to:

  • Assist pain reduction and local inflammatory modulation
  • Support soft tissue recovery processes where irritation or injury is present
  • Improve strength, stability, flexibility and overall function of the affected area where clinically appropriate
  • Rebuild strength through progressive rehabilitation as symptoms subside, to support sustainable return to normal activity

By continuing LLLT through the rehabilitation phase, the aim is to support the quality and resilience of healing tissue while strength and loading are gradually rebuilt.

Treatment Plan

Our Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) program is structured, time-limited, and medically supervised by Dr Shikha Parmar. It aims to reduce pain sensitivity, support tissue recovery processes and assist a supported return to function where the presentation is suitable.

Each patient receives a thorough assessment that considers not only the presenting condition, but also relevant health factors such as co-morbidities, medications, lifestyle, work, personal activity demands, and any nutritional deficiencies. This holistic approach allows us to tailor your care with LLLT at the core, supported by personalised advice.

Following assessment, Dr Parmar may request imaging or recommend additional medical care, rehabilitation, or specialist review where clinically indicated.

Our standard treatment program includes:

  • Up to 12 LLLT sessions, with a review after 6 to assess early progress
  • Individualised advice for managing your injury and activity modification
  • A guided rehabilitation and return-to-function plan to support longer-term recovery

Progress is reviewed during the program. Many patients notice appreciable improvement after the first 6 treatments. If there has not been sufficient improvement by this review point, further treatment may not be recommended. The number of sessions can be adjusted based on progress and discussed in detail with the patient. All treatment decisions are made transparently, with your progress, preferences, and medical context in mind.

If there is a treatment response after the first 2 to 3 weeks, we may recommend 6 further treatments, along with introducing our protocol of light and gradual graded rehab. Ongoing treatment beyond an anticipated 12-treatment protocol is generally not required, as the aim is for tissue recovery and rehabilitation to continue without ongoing treatment.

All treatment decisions are made collaboratively, keeping the patient’s progress, preferences, and medical context in mind.
