Repetitive Strain Injury Treatment with LLLT/PBMT

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT), uses red and near-infrared light applied over targeted areas. In our clinic it is used as part of a GP-led treatment approach for selected musculoskeletal pain and injury presentations, including selected repetitive strain injury presentations.

PBMT/LLLT is non-invasive and generally well tolerated. Suitability and response vary, and treatment recommendations depend on the diagnosis, severity, duration of symptoms and individual clinical factors.   • Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is caused by repetitive movement, overuse or prolonged pressure affecting muscles, tendons, joints or nerves.
  • RSI commonly affects the upper limbs, including the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands, and is often associated with repetitive work tasks or poor ergonomics.
  • Symptoms may include pain, swelling, stiffness, tingling, numbness, weakness and reduced function.
  • Standard treatments such as ice, anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injections, stretching, massage, rest or activity modification may provide temporary relief for some people, but are not suitable or effective for everyone.
  • Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), or Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT), is considered for selected RSI presentations where soft tissue irritation, tendon pain, nerve sensitivity or local inflammatory processes are contributing to symptoms.
  • LLLT may be particularly relevant where pain limits rehabilitation or where repetitive loading needs to be reduced during recovery.
  • Treatment is GP-led by Dr Shikha Parmar and delivered as part of a structured six-week program with activity advice and rehabilitation support.
  • LLLT can be considered for people with persistent RSI symptoms who have not improved with usual conservative care, after appropriate medical assessment.

What is RSI?

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a condition caused by repetitive movements, overuse or prolonged pressure on a specific part of the body. These movements or postures can strain tendons, muscles and nerves, leading to pain, discomfort and inflammation.

RSI most commonly affects the upper limbs, including the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands. It is often associated with occupations or activities involving repetitive motion such as typing, heavy lifting or assembly work.

Causes of RSI

  • Repetitive movements such as typing, gripping or lifting
  • Poor ergonomics, posture or task positioning
  • Long periods of continuous activity without adequate breaks
  • Insufficient recovery time between repetitive tasks
  • Age-related tendon changes and reduced tissue resilience

Common Tendons/Sites Involved

  • Wrist tendons, often affected by typing, mouse use or assembly work
  • Elbow tendons, including tennis elbow from repetitive wrist and forearm movement
  • Shoulder tendons, particularly with overhead lifting or repetitive reaching
  • Neck and upper back muscles, where posture and repetitive activity contribute to pain and stiffness

Symptoms

  • Dull or sharp pain that worsens with activity
  • Mild to moderate swelling around a tendon or joint
  • Stiffness or reduced range of movement
  • Tingling or numbness, especially in the hands or fingers, where nerve irritation is present
  • Weakness or difficulty with tasks requiring strength or coordination

Diagnosis

Diagnosing RSI involves clinical assessment by Dr Shikha Parmar, including a detailed history of symptoms, lifestyle and repetitive activities that may have contributed.

Physical examination assesses tenderness, range of motion, strength and function. X-rays, ultrasound or MRI may be used in some cases to assess tissue damage, inflammation or structural contributors.

Why Consider Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)?

Many patients present after limited relief from ice, stretching, massage, anti-inflammatory medication, injections, rest or exercise programs. These standard treatments may ease symptoms temporarily, but are not suitable for every stage of recovery, especially if repetitive loading continues to aggravate sensitive tissues.

Our Treatment Program

All patients are assessed by Dr Shikha Parmar (GP). Treatment is delivered within a structured six-week program, including:

  • Up to 12 LLLT sessions
  • Early progress review after the first 6 treatments
  • Individualised advice and activity modification
  • Guided rehabilitation to support longer-term function

Progress is reviewed during the program. Many patients notice appreciable improvement after the first 6 treatments. If there has not been sufficient improvement by this review point, further treatment may not be recommended.
